Here are three strategies that enhance a child’s reading comprehension.
1. Ask questions about what your child has just read. Who, What, Why, Where questions. If your child has trouble answering, point out where the answer is in the book. Stay positive and keep it fun!
2. After your child has finished a book, ask him/her to summarize the book for you. Summarizing helps a child sort through the information in a book to decide what is most important for the storyline.
3. Have your child create a storyboard – or draw pictures of the main characters and settings. Visual aids sometimes help a child see the words he/she’s reading come to life.
